tar.gz guide

Download Docker Images as tar.gz

Export a TAR online and compress it to tar.gz for USB or offline transfer.

Base URL https://containerdl.com

Why tar.gz

Smaller transfers

Compress TAR files to reduce size on USB or slow links.

Docker compatible

Decompress and load with docker load or podman load.

No Docker required

Download from any OS without Docker Desktop.

How it works

  1. Export a TAR from ContainerDL.
  2. Compress the TAR to gzip.
  3. Transfer the tar.gz file to the offline host.

Example

Export and compress to tar.gz

curl
curl -X POST https://containerdl.com/v1/exports \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer cdl_live_xxx" \
  -d '{"image":"alpine:latest"}'

curl -L https://containerdl.com/v1/exports/{id}/download \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer cdl_live_xxx" \
  -o alpine.tar

gzip -9 alpine.tar
  • ContainerDL exports TAR files, not tar.gz directly.
  • Private registry auth is supported only for GHCR and Docker Hub today.
